Some people argue drag queens are offensive because it's similar to blackface but for women (as in; men would sometimes play women's roles on stage cause women weren't allowed to act, and because they portray offensive, stereotypical caricatures). You find this argument to be:

I think there's a lot more nuance than these three. I think a lot of drag queens used it historically as a way to be more themselves when being trans was not as understood or accepted. I think currently a lot of people use it in ways that are very misogynistic (ru Paul) 1/?

But a lot of queer and trans people use it to express themselves or be loud about their identity. So there is a lot more nuance than 'is it good or bad'. I'm often uncomfortable with cis gay men in drag because it can feel very mocking of femininity. But it's not Inherently bad.

I've heard a few trans people express dislike about drag because they get compared to it, and want to distance themselves from the drag people. I've got the impression (low confidence tho!) that the trans world in general tries to distance itself from the drag world.

To clarify, I am a trans woman 😃 and I agree with that a lot but I think most trans peeps distance themselves from the "mainstream" drag world, but there is a THRIVING queer and trans drag world too. And it's not a hard divide, there is overlap and fuzziness.

Like, black face is always a bad thing, but drag is often used by queer and trans people to explore and find themselves. And even when they do, gender is a huge fuck anyways so 'drag' is just playing with gender publically and it's amazing when done so!

Here is an event that several gender queer and trans friends of mine are running, for example. It's drag, but hella queer and basically FUCK gender! It's a good example I think of trans/queer drag beyond just "haha cis dude is a woman now"

And I want to emphasize, I really appreciate you asking these questions and listening ❤️ I'm not trying to slam on you at all, but it's a complicated and divisive topic even within the trans community! Thanks for letting me spew words at you about it.
