I also fantasize about a totally perfect utopia in which my behavior is predictable, so that ads are *only* ever shown to me when they are actually relevant. Maybe I'd only see 5 ads a day on the internet, and those ads would be wonderful and useful for me.

Isn't that counter their incentives though? Not only do they want to sell you stuff you really want/need, they want to incite desire for other things you might not want at this point.

That's the weird paradox about targeted ads: they're a libertarian ideal for both parties if you really think about it. A proponent would argue both consented to these terms and conditions when signing up. Yet it somehow feels (and is?) distinctly unlibertarian in practice.

Generally it makes me happy to see an interesting or relevant ads. Especially on Twitter where promoted posts are part of your timeline, so it's jarring to see an irrelevant ad
