I can doubt that brains exist (matrix, dream, Virtual Reality, simulation, etc), but I cannot doubt that consciousness exists.

Consciousness as defined by 'human consciousness' requires a form of neural circuitry, (not necessarily a fully formed brain as evidenced by Lorber's student), yet I would still say that a broader form of it, 'sentience' or 'awareness', must predate the brain evolutionarily.
