There is actually a serious point of view that consciousness (specifically the phenomenological aspect) is fundamental. Like electromagnetism. Most neuroscientists would dismiss that view tho.

Yeah I'm on board that train

As a "panpsychist" (horrible term), I voted for "consciousness," but the latter is also just a proxy for something we don't have a good word for.
-
Just curious, is it the sheer intractability of the “hard problem” that makes you panpsychist? Or something else?

I went consciousness. A loose nervous system with no central hub along with other systems of digestion, circulation, structural, reproductive, sensory etc. Would have consciousness of a sort.. it must have??

So long as we don’t take an anthropocentric view of what consciousness is, there can be little doubt that a brain is not required for it.
-
Even if we were anthropocentric, the soul is entirely independent of the brain and the body. Resides along with, but exceeds beyond death.

I can doubt that brains exist (matrix, dream, Virtual Reality, simulation, etc), but I cannot doubt that consciousness exists.
