Homeless people make me feel kinda pro-slum. Like, if you've got a bunch of people who can't afford/function in normal housing and are sleeping in tents on the sidewalk, then we shouldn't let normal housing codes stop them from slapping together a shack somewhere.

... sorry, do you think because they can’t function in “normal” housing we should let them live in a slum? Why wouldn’t we instead try to get them in supportive housing? Everyone deserves a home, just because I’m privileged and can afford it doesn’t mean I deserve it any more.

I'm not saying slums are *to the exclusion* of aid, but rather *in addition* - right now it's literally illegal for poor people to live in subpar housing, which forces them into homelessness. This would be a great thing to change.

We gotta hold slumlords accountable. We also need to make sure housing is safe. Think about all of the additional costs to healthcare emergency services etc if people are living in unsafe conditions.

I don’t ever want to have to decide for someone, but we will never solve the root of the problem by letting slums exist. Slums can be cleaned up and safe and still remain affordable if there is support to make that kind of investment worthwhile. I’ve seen it happen.
