There are entire fields of philosophy that deal with morality. You really can't overcomplicate it.

People will readily do either, according to what is convenient to reconcile their expediency with their beliefs held by conventional conditioning they accepted without much reasoning.

I feel like it depends on the issue. I've encountered both, but I guess more issues are oversimplified, because it suits people of a specific position to do so
