The claim that this is really about controlling women's bodies is horseshit. It's a side effect, not the main goal. It's just super easy to take unflattering side effects and point at it and scream loudly THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED ALL ALONG, YOU VILLAINS
Conversation
Would be like if you campaigned for women's equal working rights in a sexist country, and then all the sexists came out of the woodwork to insist that your true goal all along was to separate women from their children, you anti-family monster.

My mom once got pregnant with a fetus with half a brain and some important organs missing. Doctors told her it was definitely going to die, she should abort. Nope - she carried the baby to term, gave birth, and he died in her arms. Here's me and my brother in this photo

My mom was once arrested for blocking the entrance to an abortion clinic (years later, I protested planned parenthood alongside her). If you walked up to my mom and told her she only cared about controlling women's bodies, that would have been such an insult.

To be clear: I think (even really late) abortions should be legal. I think it's better for society in almost every way.
But the pro-choice rhetoric sucks absolute balls, come fucking on guys you are better than this. You don't have to demonize the enemy to win.

You are making the argument that the pro-life crowd is calling me a baby murderer, and that I am the one who is supposed to be civil in my response.

Yes, absolutely. You know you're not murdering babies. They think that you don't know you're murdering babies and they're trying to help you by letting you know so that you stop. They suspect you wouldn't murder babies if you knew that's what you were doing.

But what I'm saying is, you're saying that the pro-choice crowd should tone down its rhetoric when talking to the pro-life crowd, but it doesn't seem like you're willing to flip it around. Why is it only the pro-choice crowd who gets chastised for incivility?

I used to be a staunch pro-lifer and I know the rhetoric they have against the pro-choicers (which I am now). Their rhetoric against you is way less inaccurate than your rhetoric against them. I am honestly disgusted by this side of things.

So calling me a baby killer isn't inaccurate? It seems like the only distinction you're making here is that pro-life people believe in their heart of hearts that allowing abortions kills babies.

I don't think you're a baby killer. They think you're killing babies and they are trying to stop you. The argument 'they just want to control women's bodies' isn't right, it's 'they are trying to stop what they think is baby killing'.

You said yourself that a side effect of restricting abortion is the restriction of bodily autonomy, so why is it an invalid argument to say that if that's what the effect of their actions is?

It's not, I'm fine saying that's an effect of those actions. It's just, intent is very different from effects. Say it's the effect, don't say it's the intent.

I don't think you think I'm a baby killer, but you're saying that pro-life people do. I'm just trying to understand why you think it's okay for them to call me a baby killer, but it's not okay for me to say "you're taking away women's bodily autonomy."
