I wonder how well this tracks with inflation. Maybe an income of X thousand dollars is about equally good at any point in history

It's not really an honest choice. No one can go back, and the issues today are so much more complicated than they seem from the point of view of someone who isn't in the bottom 10% and who has safety net options. those in the bottom 10% would never choose it over something better

10% of the world's populaton live on less than $1.90/day. I don't know how that breaks by rural/urban: I guess the threshold for urban populations might be a little higher, like $2.50/day 1/2

GDP per person in 1500 was about $925/year, or $2.50/day. A person in the top 1% would probably be getting at least $25/day, so they're quite a bit richer. They don't have access to modern goods or services, but I still think they're better off 2/2

Ask the same question in 100 years when the oceans have overrun all our coastal lands and people in warmer climates can no longer grow crops due to global warming. At some point, the dedication to almighty progress makes the scifi dystopia a reality.

Bottom 10% folks on 1st world countries today are still richer than the vast majority of the truly destitute 3rd world. Pretty much anyone who lives in a rich, capitalist, 1st world country lives better than anybody at all from 1530 or before.
