I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

yeah at one point most people thought it was flat and thought sicknesses were due to 'bad air' and medical science operated off the four humors sooooooo

Throughout time homo sapiens have maintain the same intellectual capabilities, our minds haven't evolved but the things we create with them,technology for example, have. But in terms of physical strength we have become weaker then our ancestors.

I think we have more of a meritocracy than we've ever had. In ye olden days, the leader would be decided by being the son of the last leader. Nowadays, our leader is democratically elected. We're better at getting better people into the right positions.
