I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

Throughout time homo sapiens have maintain the same intellectual capabilities, our minds haven't evolved but the things we create with them,technology for example, have. But in terms of physical strength we have become weaker then our ancestors.

I don't think that's the case. I think we perceive people throughout history as being less intelligent, discounting that they had less resources available to them.

I think if you tested a leader in Ancient Persia's short-term memory, ability to problem solve, and their ability think quickly, and then contrasted all that with people nowadays, whatever you measured would be roughly even.
