I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

I mean like recognizable improvements over the course of recorded history - as in, given the same knowledge and tools, a good leader today would do better than a good leader in ancient Persia or something.

I don't think so.
Ancient armies and civilizations were very clever with the technologies they had to work with.

It's actually something I've been thinking about recently too. I've been trying to shake that bias though, because like, the people who built the pyramids weren't idiots, y'know?

in some aspects yes, but in other aspects, especially deep vibrations/low frequencies, we’re becoming desensitized/losing something. losing the big picture

We have records of Go games played more than a thousand years ago (earliest recorded game from around 250 AD) and the players were pretty great. So there's a counterargument to the generalization of the Flynn effect there.
