I go with the biblical standard for the barrier between non-life and life, as set forth in Genesis 2:7... and the word is “breath.” In other words, life is officially alive once it has experienced the “breath of life.”

Six years old. By that time most of the personality has developed and so you can get a pretty good idea if the child was a mistake. Hmm. Recall an old SF story- 2 percent of the graduating six graders were regularly culled. Teachers got respect!
