You were close but had it backwards. New moon is when the Earth is between the moon and the sun, and it casts its shadow on the moon.

all these people saying "isn't it just the earth's shadow like an eclipse?" have never seen an eclipse I guess. Try putting a lantern in the middle of a room and doing an experiment, angles play a big role (i.e. the moon isn't just directly between us and the sun and is far away)

I think: When it's truly a new moon, you see nothing, so you DON'T see it in the night sky, but when it's a sliver of a crescent moon, you only see that in the morning or evening. As it gets closer to a full moon, you're mostly seeing it at night.
