In the context of the question, sadism and masochism mean the same thing if self-inflicted. Unless we're contemplating agency or will, in which case is this question not a matter of self-determination or fatalism?

When a guy masturbates, he's both giving and receiving a handjob. I'll say everyone is more masochistic than sadistic to themselves, as the goal of the former is to feed the latter. Nobody beats off just because they love giving handjobs.
