Someone once told me a really compelling theory as to why Africa, as a whole, has had so few of it's own advancements.
The basis was lack of horses. No horses means no travel, no travel means no trade, no trade means no sharing of ideas. And that leads to stagnant growth.

I have to say no opinion because these counterfactual discussions are completely useless for dealing with real world issues today. We have no idea what things would be like without slavery. It happened, it helped make the world we have today, so we should start from there.

I meant to say better. My reason is that one of the big problems that faced the African continent was a demographic drain of some of the brightest and best.

I think the idea is they would still be in Africa and thus have a lower quality of life
