It bothers me a bit when people take historical pieces and then shove progressive ideology into them. It seems to cheapen it, somehow? I wanna see heroes we're supposed to sympathize with, actively support the norms at the time, and likewise struggle under those burdens.

to clarify: in this case I don't view progressive ideology (women can vote and stuff) as bad, I just view it as cheap/preachy when forced into a character that definitely wouldn't have believed those things given the norms of the time.

It is not just progressives, your confirmation bias is showing. All groups rewrite history and use historical figures to justify whatever they want.

I hear you there. I see the point of historical and cultural accuracy in film. I bet you the heroes of our time are also completely mired in faults we can't evaluate or solve yet. The forest through the trees.

Same. Likewise with changing history in media that purports to be about or involving said history.

The captain America movies would be a lot more interesting if Cap had to get over 1940s prejudices

Many elements in those pieces have a hidden meanings, if you modify it without understanding them, you'll end up with a meaningless piece
(of shit).
