Those around me, since nobody can seem to agree on a clear formal unified definition of gender, so it means something different to everyone.

Gender has 3 meanings:
1) Grammatical gender.
2) Biological sex (this is the meaning almost everyone uses 99% of the time).
3) The social constructivist meaning, used mainly by activists.
So "gender" is determined by word games, sex is what most people mean by "gender".
