I'm at @HorizonsConf! I haven't been involved in the political side of psychedelic at all and so this is really fascinating. The general discourse swings extremely left (bordering on social justice) on the culture spectrum, which for some reason isn't what I expected.

I have a suspicion that there's something going on, which is a particular manifestation of the way psychedelics can perpetuate the idea of "positive thinking" and "the obligation of Good". I might need to write a lot more about this.

Also wanna clarify I am a fat overly drugged hippie who is ass deep in my preferred flavor of spirituality, and I mean my criticism of positive thinking in a very specific way

Trying to imagine a right-wing pyschonaut rn

That would be pretty fascinating, I wonder if it would end up with a religious bent? I know some psychedelic-heavy communities who feel neither right nor left and I feel waaaaay more comfortable around them.

Your basic non-authoritarian swings left, yeah. If any leader type says psychedelics are bad, that's a hurdle to overcome.

Not just violating norms, but consider the other coincident personality indicators like creative pursuits, empathetic awareness, general openness. All marks of a liberal worldview.

My anecdotal experience is that every person I've ever met that had a positive association with psychedelics was leftish or liberalish. While I've met some more conservative or Republican weed smokers, I haven't met any that would drop acid for a year straight, for example.

Why is that? Most likely to be distant from trying new things that so dramatically depart from norms they might be used to. Nixon really started the war on drugs and shut down a lot of psychedelic research. This probably is a big part of it IMHO.
