Sometimes people around me talk about supporting communism. Sometimes other people around me talk about having escaped communism in their home country, like a dystopic nightmare. I'm assuming these groups must mean different things by communism: what is that difference?

The problem is that the evidence against Communism is overwhelming. Quite literally the only thing a proponent has left is "no true Scotsman." So, it's kind of like trying to be empathetic with a flat earther - difficult, if you're an empirical thinker.

I think the problem with most of the answers (or rather, nearly identical predictable clichés) is that they're informed by a very dogmatic version of history as a battle between good and evil and suffer from a disabilitatingly Hegelian view of history.
