Why do so many teenagers go through an overly dramatic dark stage? I don't mean that they don't genuinely feel it, but I'm reading this Reddit thread on old cringe and it's basically everyone remembering being embarrassingly emo. I was homeschooled and the bug bit me too.

I remember feeling deeply misunderstood. Is it because society chronically misunderstands teenagers? Is the teenagers darkness phase an adjustment to lack of empathy in society?

It seems like an overexpression of a desire to be taken really seriously (instead of like a child). Maybe caused by a society or parenting that fails to develop/ack that desire in other ways, or prolongs "youth"?
