I remember feeling deeply misunderstood. Is it because society chronically misunderstands teenagers? Is the teenagers darkness phase an adjustment to lack of empathy in society?

Not sure about anyone else but my teen angst started when I was six and hasn't really stopped in my 30s yet. Just stopped expressing it via cringe poetry on LiveJournal.

Pre-adolsence may be more concerned with fitting in, seeking approval and molding oneself to the group. Adolescence may be the first critical phase of viewing the actions of the group, your parents & yourself in a negative light, a period of honing criticism that goes overboard.

I agree, but would add that there's also a lack of perspective at that age as well. It's part of the transition from focusing on one's own immediate group and interests to becoming aware of the wider world as a whole, and can be a bit overwhelming.

it hit me when I was 12 or 13 and never left me. It didn’t affect my behavior, personality, or outward appearance, but it did affect my tastes in art and music for an outlet/release of those dark feelings
