Why do so many teenagers go through an overly dramatic dark stage? I don't mean that they don't genuinely feel it, but I'm reading this Reddit thread on old cringe and it's basically everyone remembering being embarrassingly emo. I was homeschooled and the bug bit me too.

Is it like a stage in human progression where you learn how to feel long term sadness and then cause it's the first time, you go overboard?

I remember feeling deeply misunderstood. Is it because society chronically misunderstands teenagers? Is the teenagers darkness phase an adjustment to lack of empathy in society?

Not sure about anyone else but my teen angst started when I was six and hasn't really stopped in my 30s yet. Just stopped expressing it via cringe poetry on LiveJournal.

Pre-adolsence may be more concerned with fitting in, seeking approval and molding oneself to the group. Adolescence may be the first critical phase of viewing the actions of the group, your parents & yourself in a negative light, a period of honing criticism that goes overboard.

I agree, but would add that there's also a lack of perspective at that age as well. It's part of the transition from focusing on one's own immediate group and interests to becoming aware of the wider world as a whole, and can be a bit overwhelming.

Most teenagers go through a very emotional stage that can be light or dark nothing new from that Reddit post

it hit me when I was 12 or 13 and never left me. It didn’t affect my behavior, personality, or outward appearance, but it did affect my tastes in art and music for an outlet/release of those dark feelings

You have quite a few things going on at that age. You have the social issues, trying to fit in trying to stand out, trying to get noticed by the cute guy. Oh yeah hormones are raging like a bitch. They cause moodiness, headaches, acne and growth. With the growing you can have
