No spoilers but I remember being stuck on some sort of mechanical device years ago, did you have to trial and error it, or was there another way around the puzzle?

There were three puzzles that caused trouble for many people. Two of them (the wiring puzzle and puzzle box) were completely skippable. The third was the city archives about 2/3rds in which was a complex hack involving some math. That one was required and too hard (my fault).
