Discussed the rise of @tiktok_us today in class and it was really interesting to hear student perspectives about publishers being on the platform. Some thoughts/observations that i shared with them:
We looked at 125 years and 7 “generations,” ranging from the great generation to the silent generation to millennials and eventually Gen Z. By studying them, we’ve learned that generations have become less dependent of institutions (religion and marriage) and more “woke.”
Why does that matter to news? It means that Gen Z is less interested in the power of “institutions.” Traditionally, credibility was based highly off this. For this generation, it’s more about connections and experiences.
So what? That means that the personality is vital. It’s why we’re seeing the rise of influencers. When I asked about journalists and publishers they like, the focus was on the person, like Michael Barbaro and The Daily.
Will the Washington post gain a ton of subscribers tomorrow for being on tik tok? Probably not. But 5-10 years from now when Gen Z is older and have disposable income, they might just get one because of their connection way back when with tik tok guy.
The underlying point is that reaching Gen z and younger generations is a long game. It won’t happen overnight. But when you’re invested in meeting them where they are and adapting to their interests, you’ll see a return some day.
this is why I’m particularly interested and invested in what we’re trying at LAT. when we present news on Insta, are they going to read our site and get a subscription? Maybe not tomorrow. all this to say: the future of news is in good hands. students are thinking really critically about platforms and framing and I’m just so proud of them
