Admired Leadership’s Tweets

“You need to dramatically improve.” “Here we are again.” “I can’t believe that was your decision.” “I’m not sure where to begin.” “What were you thinking?” Comments like these and others may be cathartic, but they lack the utility to be acted on.

Negative comments that are viewed as lacking practicality are typically viewed as inflammatory and aggressive. Leaders often make such comments mindlessly, without even thinking about their impact. “This seems like a pattern with you.” “This is lousy work.”

Almost any time a leader offers feedback and is met with a wildly unexpected reaction, they have likely crossed the insult line. That’s why the best leaders aggressively edit their feedback and attempt to eliminate criticisms that lack specificity.

"We didn't create our Admired Leadership content, we observed it, found it, curated and elevated it. There are many times it already exists in an organization and we want to continue to highlight and point it out." #ALDirect
“How do you best manage a direct report that has more energy than you do?” ... rewarding with special projects and experiences is hugely inspiring for your team members. #ALDirect

Quiet leaders know better than most that leadership doesn’t reside in position, title, or authority. Leadership, they believe, is enacted through decisions, messages, behaviors, and actions. Quiet leaders silently go about making situations better.

When leaders are overly concerned about being right in any given situation, they are virtually guaranteed to be ineffective. Whether we like it or not, those we lead have the subtle power of sitting on their hands. Insist on being right and your plan may simply fail to execute.

Lawrence is just 23 but behaved with maturity beyond his years to show what leadership looks like after a loss. He understood "what was the right thing to do now — and how best can I achieve the right thing."

"Your kids are something new and special and wonderful. Why try to make them chips off a block anyway? That’s kind of a sad metaphor when you think about it. They are not derivatives. They are not remnants. They are so much more than that!"

#Leaders should always be encouraging and cheering on their employees. That's how you form strong bonds and make them feel valued. Ensure that you're giving them the support they need. #Leadership #TransformationalLeadership

The world is full of people who cheer for sports teams when they're great, but stop paying attention when they're not. In most organizations we only cheer for people when they're succeeding. That is fair-weather leadership. That is band-wagon leadership.

“Without forgiveness and the willingness to give others a second chance, the relationship must come to an end or change in some meaningful way. It’s much easier to give people a second chance.” But when is that smart and when is that a fool’s choice?

Knowing what needs to get done and rallying the resources to accomplish the highest priority is the work of a smart leader. When leaders work smart they find ways to complete tasks with efficiency and effectiveness. Working harder is usually trumped by working smarter.

Knowing we all have a tendency to engage in tribal thinking, especially when we strongly disagree with another’s ideology, is half the battle. The best among us try very hard not to place people into categories, instead treating them at face value for what they say and do.

In #TransformationalLeadership, we look for opportunities for our team to grow. To do that, we must get to know them and what motivates them to succeed. It's so important to build relationships with your employees. #Leadership #FutureOfWork

I tried something different today while taking notes on an hour-long Zoom call - I listened to each speaker and did not take notes while they were talking. When each finished, I wrote a headline summarizing what they talked about. I wrote 18 headlines.

In order to circumvent the whining they will have to endure, some leaders allow the anti-social behavior to influence the decision they make. They purposely make a different choice just to avoid the torment of listening to the colleague gripe.

The best leaders and coaches approach big moments the same way they prepare for less significant situations. They maintain the same communication patterns and intensity they reserve for unimportant events. Over-coaching in big moments will result in poor execution.
