Question for those who still refer to the Middle Ages as the 'Dark Ages': Have you *ever* looked at a medieval manuscript?pic.twitter.com/CBIPfF4672
Erm, I dont think anyone calls the Middle Ages the Dark Ages, mainly because the Middle Ages comes immediately after the Dark Ages and before the Renaissance, erm, hence 'middle'.
The dark ages is used to refer to the medieval period in general, actually. But it does more often get applied to the early medieval period, which was NOT “dark”.
But I can say that medievalists, whether they study early, high, or late have to deal with people calling it the dark ages. Was very much an early modem thing to refer to the whole time after the fall of Rome as that.
and middle means between the roman empire and the renaissance, not between the dark ages and the renaissance.
Let’s get a couple of things clear: A. “middle” = between (1) the beginning of the world and Golden Age and (2) End Times B. “renaissances” (plural) = repeating recycling phenomena that return to punctuate a middle period
(and yes, we can blame so-called “modernity” and “enlightenment” for all this silliness) (albeit also chocolate)pic.twitter.com/btNFjHLsQF
And to the point that the later Middle Ages weren’t seen from that perspective, I’ve seen plenty of talk on how the lager Middle Ages were a time of plague and religious upheaval, and with the exception of the Italian Renaissance was otherwise “dark”
I rest my case on the virtues, superior advanced knowledge, and non-dark-ages-ness of modernity (also, special prize for Troll Of The Day)pic.twitter.com/eM5V53y81e
