And how great Canada is in relation to the States. Yeah, there are aspects of Canada that when weighed against certain things in America, are better, i.e. healthcare, firearms law, etc.

And by that I mean, everyone in Canada is provided with health care, and there are stronger firearm laws, so we don't have as much gun violence (but it still exists).

But racism, sexism, transphobia, classism, etc. all exist in Canada. Downtown in Calgary there is a group that pickets saying that gays are going to burn in hell. But they run a bbq for the homeless so they essentially coerce people into seeing them.

The last mayor of Calgary wanted a ring road built, and the plans were going to go through First Nations land. The road would have violated treaty rights but the mayor basically didn't give a fuck.

Of course that is just one of the bullshit ways that governments of all levels treat First Nations people. It's awful, insidious, and we grow up not knowing how terrible it is because our history is literally whitewashed and sanitised.

Canada, esp my province, has a very bad rap for mental health and disabilities. TW here for next tweet.

There were provincial acts in Alberta and BC for sterilisation of people with mental illness, disabilities, and First Nations women.

There were the camps for Japanese-Canadians in WWII as well.

That stuff might be in the past but shit still happens and Canadians need to get off their shitty high horses and get rid of their shitty apathy about politics.

I saw people flipping out about how great Canada is for changing the national anthem to being more inclusive. Well the national anthem is based on settler colonialism for one, but for Canada to be awesome it's gonna take more than changing pronouns in the anthem.

I miss Canada, and I love a lot of things about Canada and the people I have there. But fuck off with this bullshit valorisation of a country that continues to shit on marginalised peoples.

Sounds like I feel when people gush about how “Germans reallx confront the dark sides of their history”- because we don’t really. We talk more about one specific atrocity than most other countries, but even that we’re not doing well, and other atrocities we just ignore.

And this whole talk puts Germans on a high horse, and then the talk of “enough is enough” starts seeping in.
