I always knew I’d have thyroid issues as I got older, I’m genetically predisposed

Gotta say I’m glad to be hypo rather than hyper. I feel for anyone with hyperthyroidism, it sounds like a real shitty thing.

Hypothyroidism isn’t fun obviously (it’s also pretty shit) but ultimately manageable with relatively cheap medication.

I will say the massive amounts of misinformation regarding thyroid health is pretty bad on the onlines.

Don’t eat broccoli! Eat Brazil nuts! Don’t lift weights! Synthetic hormones are evil! Take iodine! Don’t take iodine!

People respond differently to medication for so many reasons, not b/c Levothyroxine is synthetic.

Broccoli and related veggies have only been known to affect the thyroid if eaten in stupid amounts. It happened to a woman once.

Your body needs iodine to live, just don’t overdo it unless your doc says otherwise.

No idea where the weight lifting thing came from. Saw it circulated to my mom two years ago via an email chain

And Brazil nuts have variable levels of selenium so they aren’t a supplement.

I know folks have had poor times with GPs regarding thyroid issues. Symptoms can be mild or can be diagnosed as something else.

But the solution isn’t to listen to folks on forums (I need to take my own advice sometimes here). It can be good to talk about health.

With people who have similar stories. But that shouldn’t take the place of actual medical advice.

I know shopping for a GP can suck and for many it is a difficult process but just because one medical professional isn’t great doesn’t mean

they all are. I found a GP here in Dublin that actually listens to me and is interested in making sure I am reassured about my health.

It just really bugs me when I see someone post on a forum, oh I’m doing this. And they get someone saying “DON’T DO THAT, GO NATURAL.”

I think you can research symptoms but take that to a doctor, don’t diagnose yourself with a million things (like I’ve done) b/c someone...

Health anxiety is the worst and I hate it and I know it’s hard to get over. But the internet does little to help it, it seems.
