If you put up a screen with arresting images it makes it hard for other students to focus and if you are not paying attention you are going to slow down lecture by asking questions to fill in what you missed or consume office hours having prof repeat what's already been explained

There have been studies that show students don’t learn as well in lectures than they do in smaller tutorial or seminar environments.

That's why need to repeat ourselves, pause and take questions. But things become impossible if students can't resist incoming facebook, texts, etc.

Except not everyone feels comfortable asking questions, and taking questions can slow down a lecture. It’s your job to hold office hours.

I hold extra hours and love them. Always have. I also have students out the door. I need for students to make a good faith effort to engage the material and I'll go the extra mile to explain what they don't understand.
