Professors like this create unnecessary barriers for students, often bc they have no damn clue how much work it takes to get your need documented in the form of an accommodation letter. https://twitter.com/nrsmithccny/status/934032393572356096 …

Last time I was in college, I needed to have my service dog with me. That was the accommodation I needed. One thing.

To get that accommodation, every semester I had to have a new letter from my doctor saying that I needed the dog. Because the school apparently didn't believe in permanent disability.

Every semester I delivered the letter and they demanded I sign paperwork allowing them to call another adult and discuss my academic performance.

Every semester they demanded I sign paperwork allowing them to request my entire medical record from my physician.

Every semester they found something to complain about in the letter from my doctor, even though it was a damn copy of the one they had previously accepted, requiring me to make another appointment and go get another letter.

Every semester they tried to argue that I should use something "less distracting" than a service dog. Once they offered me a note taker for my classes.

I was lucky that no profs banned laptops because getting a damn accommodation letter for one would have been a nightmare.

PS I ended up dropping out and never finishing my bachelor's. That's the end of this story - they won. They made it so difficult to attend I gave up.

This makes me so upset. Accessibility in post secondary is one of the highest priorities and yet so many institutions fail.
