For Remembrance Day, I will say this. I recently found my great-grandfather's papers for when he signed up for WWI. He was American, but moved to Canada with his family and joined the Canadian army. He met my great-grandmother abroad, and she moved back with him to Canada.
And he did come home. My grandma told me that he was never really there after that, even though he was. As far as I know, he never talked about his experiences. But veterans deserve to be heard when they do speak.

All I know about my paternal grandfather’s time in the army is from one conversation he had with his children, in old age. Germans were of course reluctant to talk about this anyway, but much of it was also a general aversion to discussions of trauma...
