My parents were afraid I’d answer the door and get kidnapped or the house would burn down because I would forget to turn a burner off. But I never answered the door, even when I was an adult. And everyone forgot the burner, now and again.
I remember it was a big deal when I was allowed to be home by myself at the age of 13. My brothers were alone all the time and the justification was apparently because they could watch each other. The most I ever disobeyed my parents before the age of 15 was refusing to go somewhere, and it was usually because I either felt sick or really did not want to go out of anxiety.

But I had friends who had loads of freedom, were home alone all the time, walked to school by themselves. It was annoying that I didn’t have that.

Thing is though, these were the days before any of us had cell phones so I do get my parents being freaked out if they couldn’t get a hold of me and vice versa. But I still feel like I was good to be on my own. These days every kid has a cell phone.

Awhile ago I saw a 5 year old with a Blackberry which was probably one of the funniest things I’ve seen but hey, he was clearly able to use it.
