UK/irish friends, have any of you ever replaced components in a laptop? How did you deal with static discharge? A lot of the advice I see online assumes modern plugs that have a switch or flats that have non-carpeted areas, etc.

It's not as bad or risky as it used to be - you can put a laptop on a table and then touch a radiator and just be careful unscrewing and you should be fine, feel free to DM me

My radiator is on the other side of the room, so not really an option for me. I have a metal lamp but not sure if that would work.

Yeah a metal lamp plugged in but not switch on should be grounded so that should work.

if I need to keep my lamp on while working, do I need to use something else? I don't really have anything else around me.

To be honest on should be fine, touch it once when you start to discharge yourself, as long as you aren't rubbing socks on the carpet you won't be building up charge in the time it takes to replace the components. Is it ram or a SSD?

I don’t have the components yet. I want to upgrade my RAM primarily but I might also be installing a second SSD eventually for the space.

But I am asking now because I know I can install the components but I want to know ahead of time if I need to bother with anti static wristbands etc especially since I can’t find a consistent answer on how to use them.

I have found anti-static wrist bands cumbersome, I have installed RAM on 120 laptops at work without being too cautious and not one gave me any issues. So in my view, components aren't as delicate as they used to be but being careful is a good idea.
