I'm 34. Section 28 was in place from before I joined school, to the start of my last year of 6th form, age 17. "Promotion" meant anything not actively anti-gay. I can't remember it at all, but we may well have debated about gay marriage in school too. It was legalised in Canada when I was 15 and just entering high school, so it was talked about a lot.

But knowing gay friends who are teachers and still have to be in the closet so they didn't get fired because of conservative homophobic parents...I mean, that was the case a few years ago, idk about now.
