I feel like everyone I've talked to has been looking forward to masks getting normalised if for no other reason than that it will hugely cut down on colds and flus, and this idea has suddenly run screeching into a core of very loud people with media access who Do Not Want it https://twitter.com/brujacontumbao/status/1392844162622316546 …

And I don't even really understand why?

It *feels like* Consent is being Manufactured but by whom and to what possible end?

Is this just a whole bunch of people (including, apparently, the CDC) just being deeply desperate for the trappings of normality, whatever the underlying reality? I mean, it could be, right, that's what won Biden the election and I don't think it's unique to Americans

I think the mask thing has a lot of dimensions to it. For those who are HOH who need to lip read or can’t hear voices behind a mask, I can see why they want people to stop wearing masks unless you’re sick.

That is definitely fair but I really don't think this is being driven by HOH people. I also wouldn't necessarily envisage *everyone* masking up every flu season but this sudden backlash against masks seems like it's going to stop even sick people feeling comfortable using them.

Idk I mean I don’t think it is either, I am just hearing from friends who are HOH that they are frustrated by people saying they are just going to wear masks forever.

I also think part of it is related to vaccine hesitancy. People keep spreading this idea that vaccines won’t stop you from getting sick so you have to wear a mask forever and then it turns into more pandemic anxiety and doom stuff

And then people think, well what’s the point of a vaccine then? I have seen more than a few people say this. So I think that what is driving this is to say that you don’t need to protect yourself with a mask anymore rather than masks are good for when you are sick.

With that being said, if people want to continue wearing masks because it helps them in various ways, then that is cool too and no one should be made to feel bad for that I think.
