      - big in-person conferences are terrible for the environment, and fantastic opportunities for predators and abusers.

I feel like I've missed a whole convo as usual. Hybrid is the obvious way forward (how that gets implemented is sticky but a different challenge)-- I just wish the center would talk, and I know they won't, but it makes these things so needlessly dramatic : (

      You signed the letter though

I did. I believe in the utility of ICMS as one of the most affordable in-person conferences in NA. I also believe that it should be offered in hybrid form, but I was not part of the letter's drafting. No open letter can ever express 100% of the opinion of each signatory.

That letter was explicit in every way and it wasn't about hybridity. It was about keeping people unsafe, keeping this inaccessible, inequality and elitism all summed up in one letter.

As I said, I agree w/you- the letter was not about hybridity. I signed it because part of hybridity is f2f, and I believe that part of the conference should continue. I also, again, believe that it should be hybrid. I would sign that letter too. It's not zero-sum.

sorry but I do find it impossible to read “plan now to be face-to-face in the spring of 2022 or we boycott. Feel free to add a live stream of an award ceremony” as supporting accessibility.

I see you guys working really hard to have an argument, but a hybrid con requires a f2f component, so we have to argue for that, if we're going to argue for hybrid. I know you want this to be zero-sum, but life is not.

I’m not working at all. the letter was about the spring 2022 conference. it is, as I said in my tweet above which you liked and responded to, simply impossible to at *this* moment give the go-ahead to a f2f conference then. so a call for a boycott on that basis is ludicrous.

unless we’re reading two different letters?

I don’t understand signing a letter that mentions nothing about a hybrid model and in fact insults accessibility and then try to spin this as supporting hybridity. Don’t sign the damn letter that is against accessibility of you actually care about that at all.

This is disingenuous nonsense, and frankly as someone who welcomes online conferences as it is difficult for money and disability reasons, this letter is offensive and elitist. Shame on anyone who signs it and defends their position as supporting accessibility.
