‘Tis curious that this particular one rarely comes for someone, say, like me. Full Professor, Early Modern English/Shakespeare Studies, and a founding voice of Premodern Critical Race Studies. Hmm, coward much? Or, ... 3/pic.twitter.com/osGecQjDPh
If this AWS was truly concerned about the career of an ECR or grad student, why not find a more professional means to offer advice, regardless of academic focus. That he refuses speaks to how steep he is in white supremacist logic. 4/
That he is a faculty member at a UK institution and, I presume, active in area studies (in this case medieval history) makes his behavior all the more pathetic and, as Willie Shake would say, “clownish.” 5/
To any who follow me and are affected by this show of bad temper, I can only offer this advice. Clowns will be clownish and you should excise them from your lives. There are far too many in academic bent on clownishness. 6/
The past year has been extraordinary for the economic, personal, intellectual, and emotional harm done by white supremacy and its acolytes. Their insidious hold on the academy is being threatened and in places eroded. 7/
Not as quickly as we might wish but the institutions they entered have been fractured. The guarantees white skin once offered, in some cases, no longer exist and they're not happy. Do not participate in their white supremacist games. 8/
If they’re on your committee, remove them or remove yourself from the environment; a difficult decision to make but you really aren’t required to suffer their of racist, sexist, or homophobic/transphobic animosity. 9/
No degree is worth that. If they actually have no relationship to your academic institution, your mentors, or committee members – ignore them: block is your anti-racist tool. Take care of yourselves. 10/
Finish your work, publish your work, teach others about your work, be loud and proud about your work: that is the best “in your face, asshole” retort you can make. I'm sorry you have to put up with such BS. fini, Margo H.
Dr Hendricks, thank you so much for your wise and salient words. I very much appreciate what you have said.
Any time you need to find space for musing, my DM is available.
Thank you so much, I really can't express how much that means to me.
