Really need white anthopologists, archaeologists, and historians to stop referring to religious people in W. Europe as 'shamans'. Stop using Indigenous terminology like that. It's irresponsible and inaccurate.

I've seen used 'ritual experts/expertise' used in those contexts? Downside is that it focuses on specialist knowledge and being broad enough to encompass a variety of people and cultures so comes across as milquetoast. It also neglects the key pastoral element of those roles

That seems perhaps either too specific or too broad. We really don't know the role that these people played, subsets of roles, gendered aspects maybe. But it is better than "shaman" at least.
