Yup, still a huge amount either way.

last summer they were saying it was because they were developing their own video software platform but I'd bet money that didn't materialize.

I meant in the plans for 2021 they were saying they had to keep costs like this because they were making their own software instead of using Zoom.

Wonder what excuse there is to keep costs this high now so!

I’m defo not here to defend the IMC’s fees, but my understanding is that they have permanent staff members working on the programme throughout the year. My guess is that the registration fee pays for their employment.

I ran programming for a conference bigger than the IMC (my postion was unsalaried) and the only way we kept costs down & paid for the permanent office staff was to approach organisations for sponsorship. Even so, there were lots of complaints abt the registration fee.

I’ve ran conferences before, small ones, we managed to get our departments to cover food since that was essentially the only thing we needed to buy. Registration costs were low because of certain institutional regulations.

Same here (for small conferences of c. 120 people that had no registration fee). But who paid for *your* time to organise and run the conferences?

The conference organizer paid me from his own pocket but I didn’t expect to be paid, I volunteered. Not like that should be the norm: I think institutions should cover conferences.
