It's just such a weird take to me because the whole point of the word 'partner' in a queer context is so people don't have to choose between lying or outing themselves, a utility the word just loses if it's decided that only queer people are allowed use it

Yeah this insistence in the queer comm that basically you have to be out and visibly queer in some way to partake in queer culture only serves to push out people. It’s garbage gatekeeping.

Definitely, but like, with partner in particular it's effectively a demand that you be out in every context. You can be out and proud to 90% of people you know and still want to keep some privacy from, say, your new coworkers, even just temporarily. But nope, can't use 'partner'!
