It was an adjustment to hear it but in Australia it feels like almost everyone uses “partner” regardless of the genders or actual marital status. It’s great, imo.

It's absolutely the same here, I have a theory about specific cultural reasons for it but that's another thing that bothers me about the discourse; it's very US-centric.

It's just such a weird take to me because the whole point of the word 'partner' in a queer context is so people don't have to choose between lying or outing themselves, a utility the word just loses if it's decided that only queer people are allowed use it

Yeah this insistence in the queer comm that basically you have to be out and visibly queer in some way to partake in queer culture only serves to push out people. It’s garbage gatekeeping.
