BHT excavated in the west ward of the castle in the 60s and 70s. one day he picked up and left (IIRC some bureaucracy nonsense). he literally left his offices by the trenches full of soil samples and a milk bottle and a newspaper from ‘74. none of them were opened til around 1999

BUT that wasn’t all. upon his death, his estate’s archaeological material was being assessed for accession by RCAHMS (royal commission on ancient and historic monuments scotland). plans and sketches and notes everywhere from multiple sites. (he’s best known for yeavering)

there was an ugly brown suitcase in his apartment. nondescript. wasn’t even going to be checked. but it rattled a little. inside crushed cotton batting were the remains of swords and an axe. unconserved. from about 1400 years ago. just right f’ing there. COULD YOU IMAGINE???
