People who say the field of medieval studies is 'decolonising' - how exactly? Can you give me some specific examples? Examples that don't just rely on mentioning (but clearly not reading or absorbing!) the work of specific POC and other marginalised scholars?

Okay, for starters - check out Dr Shazia Jagot's pioneering work on Chaucer. Lots of links on twitter. Also #UniversityofYork setting up new pathway for MA in Medieval Studies focussing on links to Islamic World. Lots of stuff out there!

‘Examples that don't just rely on mentioning the work of specific POC’. Researching the ‘Islamic world’ (with a Eurocentric view of it at that) is not inherently decolonial. All crusades scholars look at Europe’s links with the Islamic world, is their work always decolonial?

'All' crusades scholars? I'm sure not Universities based in Middle East. Are you saying what's 'colonial' is the approach to the subject, how they're conducting the research or study? Confused.

Surely all crusades scholars look at contact between Europe and the Islamic World, even those who work in the Middle East? If you don’t know what I mean by decolonisation I’d recommend reading ‘Decolonization is not a metaphor’ https://jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/des/article/view/18630 …

I think that'd be an assumption, You'd have to find out from scholars based at Damascus or Baghdad. I didn't read any of their work during my MA (though I heard about them...) but I'm pretty sure not ALL of their work focuses on the crusades in relation to Europe.

The Crusades, as a field, has to look at contacts between Europe and the Islamic World, which is what Florence is getting at and studying or not studying in the ME doesn't equal a non-Eurocentric perspective.

I disagree there - studying Saladin's campaigns in an Arabic medium University based in the ME could definitely be considered a non-Eurocentric perspective.
