In the previous two films in this series, Godzilla largely ignores humans and - while he has his own unrelated noticed for doing so - saves the world from worse monsters twice. I will not stand for the character assassination in the replies to this tweet. https://twitter.com/clastowka/status/1353424046503944192 …

It's hardly deep lore that Godzilla going out of his way to hurt people is out of character! Even in Shin Gojira and I'm pretty sure in the original, he's more of a force of nature that doesn't take any notice of people unless directly provoked!

(also because my formative Godzilla experience was the 1998 film I can't shake this uncomfortable feeling that I keep misgendering Godzilla)

In the Japanese films Godzilla was basically “it” and in the English dubs I believe was male. The co-creator said that Godzilla is male too I believe.

He can lay eggs through parthenogenesis I guess? According to Wikipedia.

Oh yeah he's consistently treated as male in everything else I've seen, it's treated as a twist in the 98 version that she's female (in a very 1998 'aha, you see the doctor is a woman!'-style Feminist Moment). It's something intentionally different about that version.
