The first of the #earlyenglishqueens I want to highlight is Cynethryth (fl. 770-798), queen of King Offa of Mercia. Cynethryth is a remarkable figure for a number of reasons. She is the earliest English queen of whom we have a portrait, depicted on her own coinage: 1/10pic.twitter.com/Dvr7PcZxr0

Two sides of a shiny metal medieval coin. One has a portrait of Queen Cynethryth and says 'EOBA'. The other side says 'Cynethyth Regina M'

Cynethryth was the queen of Mercia during a period known as the 'Mercian Supremacy', when her husband Offa was the most powerful king in England. Offa had a long reign in which the status and importance of Queen Cynethryth was emphasised in many ways. 2/

Cynethryth's coins, minted in Canterbury, Kent, are remarkable. She is the only English queen consort to have her own coinage, and it is thought this may follow the Roman imperial model of Emperors issuing coins in their wives names (below Sabina wife of Hadrian) 3/pic.twitter.com/pbtZKc1CgR

However, Cynethryth's coins existed in a large volume & differed in function from Offa's. This was clearly her own coinage and not just a subset of Offa's. It's possible she was granted income in the form of coins minted by a particular moneyer (Eoba who is named on the coin). 4/

Offa's reign has another anomalous form of coinage: the Archbishop of Canterbury Jaenberht also had his own coins. It's possible his coinage was confiscated and replaced with Cynethryth's. The function of this coinage is certainly linked with Offa's power over Kent. 5/pic.twitter.com/ArLGWD9i4Q

Another thing that sets Cynethryth apart is how she is styled as queen in the strongest terms - 'regina Merciorum' on her coins and charters, and in one instance 'dei gratia regina Merciorum' (queen of Mercia by the grace of God). She is the first queen to have such a formula. 6/

The famous scholar Alcuin was in correspondence with Cynethryth, though none of his letters to her survive. In one letter to another recipient he calls her 'dispensatrix domus' (steward of the household) indicating her importance to the royal palace. 7/

After Offa's death in 796 Cynethryth became Abbess of Cookham, which had been bequeathed into her personal ownership during Offa’s lifetime. During her son Ecgfrith's brief reign of under a year (he died of an unexpected illness) she attested two of his charters. 8/

At the Synod of Clovesho in 798 Cynethryth was named as Offa’s heir during a property dispute. She likely played a major role in the management of an extensive network of monasteries and their land, including Glastonbury and Fladbury where her daughter Æthelburh was abbess 9/

It's likely that Queen Cynethryth's status was exalted to legitimise her only son Ecgfrith, who was inaugurated during King Offa's lifetime. Her power and status were part of an dynastic manoeuvre that was designed specifically to outlive her husband. 10/10 #medievaltwitter

      Replying to @FlorenceHRS

I find this very interesting as the possibility that she was a descendant of Penda while Offa's ancestry is extremely tenuous, that establishing her power lends it to Ecgfrith. Very interesting, there are some parallels in Ireland like this too.
