Just summarizing some of the various racist medievalisms that seem to have driven the mob that stormed the US capital. So it starts with the Trump rally, at which Rudy Giuliani called for a "trial by combat" to determine the winner of the election. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/HnlzjjlJ8B

The people at the rally then stormed the Capital building. As others have noted, several of them seem to have had "medieval" symbols, including the Valknot, all of which are popular among far-right extremists.https://twitter.com/heyouonline/status/1347073644367814659 …

This symbol is a Valknot, listed as a hate symbol by the ADL https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/valknot … It’s one of many runic and other medievalist symbols used by white extremists to signal their ideology https://twitter.com/photogramel/status/1347005352651354112 …

Btw “Q shaman” has a Valknut, an Yggdrasil, and a Mjolnir tattoo- Nordic pagan symbols frequently appropriated by far right racists and Neo-Nazis. Other folks in this shot are from the TWP. These are literally Neo-Nazis. It’s not an exaggeration or rhetoric- it’s who they are. pic.twitter.com/hR1WI9UkuT

THREAD: Time for another tasty thread with resources. No matter if you're a scholar, student, or general public, if you're #antiracist & #antifascist, here's a thread abt misappropriation of medieval symbols. The so-called "Q Shaman," whose name is Jake Angeli, seems to be steeped in medievalisms. This is a picture from him at a climate rally recently, with a sign claiming that the climate crisis is "Ragnarok." https://www.lmtonline.com/nation/article/q-shaman-us-capitol-antifa-matt-gaetz-15852663.php …pic.twitter.com/7OoVWkQNaS

(the connections between environmental activism and the far-right are too complicated to go into here, but, suffice to say, there's a long history of the far-right showing supporting for environmental movements through racist rhetoric)

It is important to note that Angeli is not wearing a Viking helmet. He is appropriating Indigenous American culture and symbols.https://twitter.com/NeolithicSheep/status/1346995945167323136 …

Also can medievalists stop calling it a Viking helmet just cause ôl dude has runic tattoos. Not everything is about you, y'all. My man is misappropriating indigenous American culture. Talk about his tattoos but stop with the "real Viking helmets didn't have horns" https://twitter.com/mysicksadlife/status/1346992862727032834 …

And again this is the mistake many of us made, we assumed from the horns it was a Viking thing: it’s not. It is Native appropriation as the QT says.
