I get what he was going for, but he sounds like a megalomaniac. Just showing the child how to use the tool would have garnered the same result and achieved the same lesson. This dude needs some therapy, imagine when she's older and has car trouble.

it doesn't. figuring something out - opposed to someone showing it you - trains different regions of the brain. This is why it is fun to solve a sudoku, but not fun to buy a ready-solved version.

Ok, well I don't think you can or should compare solving a puzzle, a leisure activity, to acquiring food. Maybe he should find better opportunities to teach those skills. I'm a father of two, my oldest is more than capable of feeding herself and I never acted like Apocalypse dad.

i think the time frame was drawn out and the "if you don't open it, we go hungry tonight" was needlessly maneuvering him into a corner, but there is nothing against letting your kids try to figure out daily life activities.

yeah letting a kid try to figure it out for a few minutes and then you show them how to do it is fine, but that isn't what happened and that is what is being criticised.
