There’s a reason forts generally were built on outcrops (Cashel, Dun Eidyn, Dunadd) because those had strategic advantage. Height and the possibility for several layers of walls/terraces for defense.

Dig a castle into the side of a mountain and while you might have chokepoints that will only work with good defenses and enough soldiers to defend them.

If Helm’s Deep was constructed higher, and maybe used the floodplains more effectively with better defenses then this would not have been the shitshow it was.

Also, the sewer gate? Even without the blackpowder that could be pried open.

It’s very bad!! Rohan should be spending its money and power into fortifying Edoras. It’s a better position.

I can't think of a single medieval fortress built into the side of a mt. It's a bad idea, people will just. . . . go over the mt.

Right? I know there are some built up high in mountains or even on top! But that is more useful since it’s hard to climb up there and treacherous. But it’s literally a flat plain in front. Like WHAT.

Flat plains are good for seeing the enemy a long way off (and then so you can shoot them) but . . . . you want that all the way around, so you're hard to surround. Theoden is like "let's literally trap ourselves."

Edoras is way better (also being on a peak or something > plain). Helms Deep is like, literally, in the worst place.

The worst place. I cannot get over how bad it is. Edoras you can see for miles around! And the height advantage too! Dig some deep ditches around, get some wooden spikes, would be way more effective.

The military strategy of Rohan was apparently designed by a guy on PCP trying to find his way out of the bathroom.
