Also why does Helm’s Deep just have the one door? Why no extra outer wall, a moat, a portcullis, drawbridge? You have the one outer wall and dudes can just WALK RIGHT UP? Also, how no one thought through the fact there is just the one small underground passage to escape?

There’s a reason forts generally were built on outcrops (Cashel, Dun Eidyn, Dunadd) because those had strategic advantage. Height and the possibility for several layers of walls/terraces for defense.

Dig a castle into the side of a mountain and while you might have chokepoints that will only work with good defenses and enough soldiers to defend them.

If Helm’s Deep was constructed higher, and maybe used the floodplains more effectively with better defenses then this would not have been the shitshow it was.

Also, the sewer gate? Even without the blackpowder that could be pried open.

Listen I am not a military historian or archaeologist but you look at enough hillforts and you realize they are built in certain ways for good reason.

Same with castles. If you have to force the enemy to only come at you from the water or a single bridge that you can pull up at any time OR that you have several walls/doors with towers to defend them, you’re better off.
