How are hobbits making salt? They going to the sea? Or are they trading with humans who do live near the sea?

Are you not aware that salt can be mined from the ground? The salt we eat and season food with doesn’t come from the contemporary oceans

You could have said this in a way without being a dick about it. Yes I know there are salt mines. Also the salt I use does come from the ocean because I use sea salt pretty exclusively.

Also, LOTR isn’t contemporary, it’s fantasy based on medieval Europe, salt mining was incredibly dangerous before the Industrial Revolution, so no I don’t think the Hobbits were mining salt. In any event it implies trade with those who DO mine, like dwarves.
