People say a lot about Sam and Frodo but nothing about Rosie and frankly I will not stand for this.

Frodo used to be my fave since I loved Elijah Wood as a young teen but on rewatching, of the two I heavily identify with Sam.

Sam: likes cooking and gardening, enjoys a comfortable bed, practical, reasonable, and will absolutely fight a motherfucker for his friends even if it means he’ll get his ass kicked.

Sam: loves bookish soft Frodo and ALSO likes tall Rosie (she’s taller than Sam anyway) who probably has to daily forcibly break up fights and shit at the tavern.

Honestly I wish we learned more about Rosie but since Tolkien wasn’t that interested in including more than 5 or 6 women in the series overall let alone give them much characterization I can only fill in the blanks.

I also identified a lot with Eowyn growing up but that’s probably not that unusual.

Do you think there are any Nazgûl stans out there?

Probably. Not sure why I even asked.

Tbh I think it would be excellent for some literature on orcs or Haradrim who just hated Sauron. Surely there were dissenters and rebels? Who knows if Tolkien ever conceived of nuance there, I find it unlikely but it is something I think about a lot.

This is true. And honestly there is far too much discussion of the medievalism in LOTR and not enough on the racism. There have definitely been things written on it and it is often discussed but from an academic perspective it needs more.

People in my field hold up Tolkien on a pedestal far too much.
