Metal detecting for archaeological objects is illegal in Rep of Ireland. There are numerous examples of the Irish Gardaí working with National Museum of Ireland to identify, visit and prosecute illegal metal detector users..and court cases have been reported on in national mediahttps://twitter.com/thecelticist/status/1339297707370876929 …

There have also been, unfortunately, some UK archaeologists-including one employee of a major British museum some years back - who have argued that “the Irish” need to adopt UK approaches to metal detecting. No we don’t- €63,486 fine or 3 months in jailhttps://www.museum.ie/en-IE/Collections-Research/The-Law-on-Metal-Detecting-in-Ireland …

As I always say, I used to visit the
@NMIreland with my father as a child. I’d ask him “Who owns this stuff, Dad?” “We do”, he said “the people of Ireland do” Metal detecting illegally for archaeological objects in Ireland is theft.2 replies 0 retweets 10 likes -

And it also bothers me that the "incentives" the UK uses to get people to declare finds are monetary, but that just further pushes people to do it, hoping they will find loads of gold and make millions.

that capitalist mindset is very damaging and I think it also skews peoples' perception that the only archaeological finds worth finding are something we can view through a capitalist lens.
